Legalisation

Legalisation refers to the process of verifying that the signature on your document is authentic. If your document has been notarised, the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office in the UK will check the notary’s signature and seal against their records and confirm authenticity by adding an “apostille” to the back of the notarised page. For many countries, this is sufficient but some countries want the document to be checked by their own embassy following the apostille process. This is generally referred to as attestation, but the terms legalisation and attestation are used interchangeably.
